Introducing The Box Set

This is a series of stackable boxes reimagined from a basic cuboid.

These boxes come in 3 different heights and can be used individually or as a cohesive set. Even the lid can double as a standalone tray.

Body L 200mm x 80mm x 45mm; Depth 24mm
Body M 200mm x 80mm x 37mm; Depth 18mm
Body S 200mm x 80mm x 29mm; Depth 10mm
Lid / Tray 200mm x 80mm x 15mm

The Shape

When placed on a table, the shape seems to leap off the surface, giving a sense of upward movement.

Holding them reveals a bottom that gradually curves inward, like a rounded belly, forming a wave that underscores their role as vessels for holding items.

The wave motif is echoed in the shapes of the top edges. When stacked, the boxes naturally fit together, achieving a balanced and stable configuration.

The internal corners feature rounded curvatures instead of simple fillets, creating a smooth transition that contrasts with the sharp outer corners.

The Materials & Finish

The boxes will be available in Black Walnut, Cherry & White Oak. Crafted from a single block of wood, each box is meticulously carved.

The surfaces are hand-sanded with up to 240-grit sandpaper and finished with a smooth wood wax oil, giving them a natural glow. With proper maintenance and care, the box will age gracefully, enhancing its beauty over time.

Before production, we usually let our timber rest and acclimate for two weeks. However, because timber is an organic material, it is constantly changing. Factors such as humidity, temperature, and sunlight can alter its shape. Especially with our manufacturing process (carving the box from a single block of wood), the boxes are living objects that can truly reflect your lifestyle.

We have designed the boxes to accommodate some shape changes, but if they start to wobble slightly after settling into your home, simply give them a light sanding and reapply wood oil.

The Product Development

It all began on paper with a box and a serious of ellipses overlapping each others. With the idea, we moved to 3D software for rapid virtual prototyping. After a few design iterations, the final design emerged.

We then sent the scaled files for form testing using MJF (Multi Jet Fusion) 3D printing. We chose MJF 3D printing because it provides the precise accuracy needed for the test.

Once the form was proven efficient, we began full-scale modelling with cardboard to determine the optimal sizing options.

Next, we printed the full-scale models using FDM 3D printing to finalise the details.

Satisfied with the results, we sent the files to the CNC workshop for the manufacturer samples production.

The Packaging

For the packaging, we set ourselves a brief:

  1. Upon opening the box, the first thing visible should be the arched side profile of the inner boxes.
  2. There should be no loose cushioning materials inside; instead, the products need to be protected by a hard support from collisions.
  3. The outer wrapping should be able to flatten completely, serving as a canvas for all product information. We want to simplified the packaging and eliminate unnecessary loose items.

So, we developed packaging solution version 1 and created a mockup.

We consider the packaging not just as an accessory to the product, but a standalone product in itself. To maximise user experience while reducing waste and environmental impact, it requires careful attentions and thoughtful design. We need your help to complete this development.

The RISO Print

Designers love technical drawings, so do we! These drawings not only document design thinkings, but as graphics, they can also be visually pleasing.

To celebrate the box form, we have transformed the principal line drawing into a “tomato” poster. For printing, we chose the Risograph technique, which prints in colour layers and creates unique overlay effects. Each copy is slightly different, showcasing a distinct RISO texture.

The 3-colour RISO print poster measures A5 and is printed on 250gsm textured paper. Each one will be signed and numbered.

The poster is included in the package if you purchase a set of the boxes. Or You can purchase the poster separately for £15 (approx. $18.99).
