Currently, plant-based leathers usually require the use of synthetic resins, adhesives, or coatings to ensure that they meet the performance requirements. This is where the innovative and unique material MIRUM® comes into play. The material we use for our BAILEY handbags is a newly developed plant-based material that mimics the haptic and physical characteristics of animal leather and is much more environmentally friendly in production. In the manufacturing process, there are no petrochemical additives needed, the material is 100 % bio-based – therefore plastic free – and it is recyclable. The vegan leather we use for BAILEY not only eliminates the ethical concerns, but also addresses the issues of circularity and recyclability of current synthetic leathers on the market.

Animal leather is not only ethically problematic, but also has an immense negative impact on our environment. During its production process, many intermediate steps are necessary, which not only require a lot of water and provide for a high greenhouse gas emission but produce harmful waste materials too. Especially, the complicated and resource-intensive tanning process generates chemically contaminated waste. Synthetic leather eliminates the ethical concerns but leaves the issues of circularity and recyclability. Here, our solution comes into place: Our handbag is made of plant-based leather that is both plastic-free and animal friendly (we love happy cows!).

BAILEY – The next generation handbag

The material used for our BAILEY bag brings us a big step closer to our goal of circularity. In short, unlike materials made with petrochemicals, MIRUM® does not become waste at the end of its life. Instead, it can be used again and again either to make more products or to give back nutrients to the natural environment. Not only is the recycled material as elegant and high-performance as it was in its virgin state, but this process allows us to decrease our use of virgin raw materials, perpetually reducing our impact on the environment with each reuse cycle. If for any reason MIRUM® exits this cycle, its bio-neutrality allows it to return its nutrients to the earth safely and efficiently.

For our ambitions regarding our new handbag BAILEY, we have in fact been nominated for the German Sustainability Award in the category “sustainable design”. The award honors sustainability visionaries and pioneers and serves as a measure of the German Sustainability Strategy.

Highest craftsmanship and environment friendly

We believe that honest craftsmanship leads to exceptional quality products that last. Melina Bucher handbags are designed in our headquarters in Germany and are handcrafted in selected European manufactories.

To reduce the production of samples, we use 3D models to get a first impression in advance.

To reduce transport routes, the production of our bags is concentrated on the Spain region Ubrique – which is known since decades for its exceptional craftsmen. Because it is important to us that customers know exactly what they are buying, transparency and traceability are integral parts of our business. We attach great importance to traceable supply chains and a partnership network.

Our BAILEY handbag is made of high quality and high-performance plant-based leather and GRS certified recycled cotton lining. Even in the adhesives and dyes used in the manufacturing process, there are no animal ingredients included. For our efforts, we got the PETA-approved vegan certification. The recycled cotton we use for the lining of the handbag meets the internationally recognized Global Recycling Standard for ecological textiles. By using lining with recycled content, we further reduce the amount of new resources needed for our manufacturing.

When we say that our bags are 100% vegan, we mean it: Even for our packaging, we only use vegan paper boxes and tape with animal-free glue.

 MELINA BUCHER: REDEFINING LUXURY – ONE BAG AT A TIME

We, the team of Melina Bucher, are high fashion enthusiasts and animal lovers at the same time. It all started with Melina Bucher’s desire to reward herself with a designer bag after her master’s degree. But as an animal lover and a woman with exquisite taste, she had demands: the handbag should be of highest quality with a high-end aesthetic, made fairly and, above all, without any animal cruelty involved. When Melina couldn’t find a high fashion brand that fit, she started her own business in 2019.

The BAILEY handbag – Intelligently designed by a woman for women

Melina Bucher has been changing the luxury world with vegan handbags since 2019. Our goal is to be pioneers for ethical, sustainable luxury fashion and change the fashion world to become a more ethical, inclusive place. As a team, we are always working on new, innovative ideas to make the fashion world more animal and environmentally friendly. With BAILEY, we are developing the handbags of the future. They are one of the first accessories using MIRUM® – made from 100% plant-based leather, that is circular and does not depend on the use of petroleum-based raw materials.
