After World War II, former engineers from Nakajima Aircraft—the predecessor of today’s Subaru—brought their mechanical skills to a new frontier: knitting. Using handmade spinning machines, they laid the foundation for what became a booming industry in Ota City.
By the 1980s, Ota was producing high-quality knitwear for markets across Japan. But in the 1990s, a shift to overseas production nearly wiped the industry out. Today, fewer than 10 factories remain.
OTA KNIT is our response. A collective of artisans, designers, and makers uniting under one mission: to stitch together the past and future of Ota’s knitting legacy.
The No Scratchy Scarf is the embodiment of our philosophy—thoughtful, functional, and rooted in heritage.
We chose one of the world’s finest wools: Extra Super Fine Wool (SUPER 160’s), with a fiber diameter of only 15.1–15.5 microns—so soft, it rivals cashmere. The scarf features a double-layered jacquard knit, engineered to trap warmth while maintaining breathability. It’s reversible, giving you two colorways in one elegant design.
