open_slate: A Powerful and Private 2-in-1 Tablet

Written by

Meet open_slate: a poweful 2-in-1 tablet with modular design, native Linux and Android support and hardware killswitches.

Remember when you could swap your device’s battery in seconds? Expand your memory without having to buy a new device, or simply plug in your wired headset?

Every product cycle, something we value disappears. Headphone jacks. Removable batteries. SD card slots. Physical buttons. Expandable storage. The ability to repair. The right to choose our software. Even the ports we need to connect to more devices. Soon, we may be asked to pay a subscription to use our own devices.

Instead of keeping the functionality users expect, new privacy intrusive features get introduced – cloud AI assistants being the latest.

People are publicly speaking up, but the industry doesn’t listen. It just doubles down:

❌ Sealed batteries are necessary for thin, durable devices

❌ Modularity must be sacrificed for performance

❌ Fewer ports mean better design

❌ Locked-down software is the price of a smooth experience

❌ Always-on sensors are just something users have to accept

❌ AI assistants are great, nevermind the privacy issues

These aren’t technical inevitabilities. They’re choices. Choices that don’t serve us. Choices made despite what we actually ask for.

We decided to challenge this.

open_slate is our answer to those broken promises.

Introducing open_slate

We designed a tablet that challenges long-standing narratives and explores what hardware can look like when it’s:

✅Built to last

✅Designed to stay open

✅Meant to remain under your control for years

Features & Specs

Product highlights

open_slate is a new kind of tablet – built for people who want performance, control and privacy.

Powerful and Efficient

The latest gen MediaTek Genio 720 Chipset selected as the optimal platform for balancing performance, efficiency, and open-source compatibility.

Available in Two Configurations

  • Base version: 8GB RAM + 128GB Storage. Perfect for browsing and streaming.
  • Pro version: 16GB RAM + 256GB Storage. Designed for multitasking, productivity and more intensive workflows.

Stunning Visuals

open_slate comes in two configurations, each with a different display to match your needs and budget.

  • Base version: equipped with a 2.4K 12″ IPS display (16.7 million colors, 90Hz refresh rate, 400 nits brightness).
  • Pro version: equipped with a stunning 2.8K 12″ OLED display (1 Billion colors, 120Hz refresh rate, 600/1000 nits brightness).

Replaceable Battery – Press. Remove. Replace. Done.

No tools. No risk of breaking your screen. Just a simple push-button release mechanism that lets you swap batteries as easily as changing AA batteries in a remote.

Why this matters:

  • Extend device life by years: When your battery degrades (and all batteries do), you don’t need a new tablet. Just a new battery.
  • Always have power: Carry a spare battery. Swap mid-flight. Never hunt for an outlet again.
  • Sustainable: One device, multiple batteries over its lifetime.

No appointment at a “Genius Bar.” No shipping your device away for a week. No paying someone $200 to do a $30 repair.

When Off Means OffSoftware settings can be ignored. Permissions can be bypassed. Background processes can run hidden. Malware can override controls.

But you can’t hack physics.

open_slate features physical hardware kill switches that completely disconnect key components at the circuit level. When you flip the switch, power to that component is cut. Period.

You can physically disable:

❌ Cameras

❌ Microphone

❌ GPS

❌ Bluetooth

❌ WiFi

M.2 Expansion Slot – Configure open_slate to your needs A standard M.2 with PCIe 2.0 interface built right in. Accessible with a single screwdriver.

Upgrade your storage:

  • Start with 128GB or 256GB
  • Add up to 1TB with an off-the-shelf M.2 SSD

Use the same SSDs available for laptops — no proprietary parts, no inflated prices

But it’s more than a storage expansion. The slot is compatible with any M.2 card – from external cellular modems, AI accelerators, RNG cards, and whatever is available on the market.

Easily Repairable – A Screwdriver is All You Need Every component accessible. Every part replaceable. Zero proprietary tools required.

  • Affordable repairs: Third-party repair shops can service it. You can service it yourself. No “authorized service center” monopoly.
  • Long device life: When something breaks (screens crack, ports wear out), you fix it instead of replacing the entire device
  • Learn and tinker: Tech enthusiasts can upgrade, modify, and experiment

OS Freedom

Tablets lock you into a single ecosystem. We’re doing something different.

open_slate is designed to be the most OS-compatible tablet on the market.

At launch, open_slate will support BraxOS & AOSP (Andorid), as well as Ubuntu, Ubuntu Touch and Yocto Linux (Linux), with plan to support more Operating Systems.

BraxOS

BraxOS is our open-sourced and deGoogled Android Operating System.

BraxOS prioritizes user privacy, and smooth user experience.

Linux Support

One of the main reasons for selecting the Genio 720 chip, apart from its power and feature-rich design, is the mainline Linux kernel support provided by MediaTek and officially contracted integrators.

Mainline Linux kernel support is a major step towards having a real Linux-compatible ARM tablet.

Our objective is to make open_slate the tablet with highest OS compatibility – both native Linux and Android.

To support our goal, we will be providing free development kits and financial incentives to porters and maintainers.

All the ports you need

On most tablets you will get a single USB-C port, or two if you’re lucky.

open_slate is built to connect to your real-world setup, whether you’re plugging into monitors, peripherals, storage, or charging accessories.

Adapts to Your Workflow

Built-In Connectivity

  • Multiple USB-C ports
  • Display output (connect to external monitor)
  • Full keyboard support
  • Stylus Pen compatibility
  • Standard peripherals support

Use It Your Way

  • Tablet mode for portability
  • Desktop mode with keyboard and monitor
  • Drawing tablet for creative work
  • Lightweight workstation for development

open_slate doesn’t force a single way of working. It plugs into your real-world setup.

About

open_slate is our attempt to build what we think technology should look like.

Every design choice – replaceable battery, hardware kill switches, multi-port support, open OS support, comes from asking a simple question: what would we actually want to use ourselves? We got inspired by some of the cool features and functionality introduced before, but were somehow discontinued.

Our Belief System

When You Buy Something, It Should Be Yours

This sounds obvious, but it’s not how most devices work anymore.

When you buy open_slate:

✅Repair it yourself or take it anywhere

✅Install whatever OS you want

✅Modify and upgrade it however you like

✅Keep using it as long as it physically works

Privacy Must be Preserved

If you’re not new to our community, you know that we put priority on user privacy.

Our hardware only runs open-sourced and privacy-respecting software – whether that’s deGoogled Android or Linux.

open_slate won’t be an exception – we won’t support Windows or GMS certified version of Android, as this goes against our value system.

But that’s not all. We’re taking the matter of privacy a step further with open_slate by introducing physical switches that will allow users to disable any component or sensor – temporarily or permanently.

Devices Should Last Longer

Devices shouldn’t become useless because one company decided (or is forced) to stop supporting it.

With open_slate, you’re not at anyone’s mercy: open-source code means the community can maintain software when we can’t. Easy repairs mean a dead battery or cracked screen doesn’t kill the whole device. Multiple OS options mean if one stops working, you switch to another. Open-source Operating Systems have been existing before us, and will exist after us.

Our team

We’re the team behind BraX3 – the most successful smartphone project in crowdfunding history. We delivered to our community and proved there’s real demand for devices that respect users.
