Artic improves the airflow by drawing out heat from the rear vent, prevent heat buildup inside the console, especially around the CPU and GPU area. The cooler utilizes the 6 Hyperfluid fans to exhaust and dissipate heat via the Lamella design frame effectively. This prevents thermal throttling and other issues caused by excessive heat from arising, creating an enjoyable and longer playtime.

The PlayStation®5 console is a powerful gaming console that generates extensive heat from its CPU and GPU during operation, especially when the console runs high graphic intensive games.

The PS5 is equipped with a blower fan and heatsinks to draw cool air into the console and push hot air out. The PS5 can still run into heat-related issues over extended periods of time, or in poorly ventilated environments.

Newer PS5 models has been released with model number starting from CFI-1100, with lighter in weight and have a smaller heatsink, which could lead to changes in temperature.

Final Fantasy XVI reportedly overheats PS5 consoles and causing them to shut down. The news was reported by Push Square and GamesRadar+ featuring users with overheating problems.

During the EVO 2023 fighting game tournament, players reported their USB accessories that seemingly got too hot and melted when plugged into the tournament’s PS5 console. It is claimed that this is due to the high temperature at the rear of PS5 consoles. This was later reported by Kotaku

Thermal testing is an essential part of developing the cooler since its sole function is to dissipate heat from the console and maintain optimal temperatures.

During the test, we compared the temperature with and without the Artic PS5 cooler. The data was then analyzed by our engineers to ensure it met our goals in terms of temperature decrease and noise level.

Thermal Test with Artic Cooler

For the thermal testing, we set up three units of Fluke thermal imaging devices for better accuracy. The test was conducted in an enclosed environment with stable room temperature for an extended period of time. This also involved running the console at maximum load, playing high graphic intensive games like Spider-Man Miles Morales to simulate real-world situations.

To conduct internal thermal testing, it was necessary to dismantle the PS5 console and attach thermal wires to various components, allowing us to monitor and capture thermal data for analysis.

We attached thermal wires to several key areas of the console, including the CPU and GPU (SOC), memory modules (RAM), and heatsink, using thermal adhesive to ensure a secure connection. These wires were then connected to a digital thermometer to measure temperature changes over time.

The thermal data collected during testing proved to be instrumental in the development of the Artic cooler, allowing our engineers to fine-tune the fan design for optimal performance.
