Silk has long been known as a material that is gentle on the skin and good for beauty. When Rin Kanemoto learned of its benefits, he wondered if it could be applied to a brush that comes into direct contact with hair and scalp. Since a brush is used every day, it should be able to deliver the gentleness of silk. However, even after searching the market, there was no brush made with silk. That is when he decided to make it himself—this was the beginning of the challenge.
Japan’s largest mechanized silk factory, Usui Raw Silk Co., Ltd.
In the search for the highest quality materials, they arrived at Japan’s largest mechanized silk factory, Usui Silk Co., Ltd. Located at the base of Mount Myogi in Gunma, this factory handles about 70 percent of domestically produced cocoons and is one of only two remaining large-scale silk factories in Japan. Even today, skilled artisans continue to spin silk from the cocoons.
Usui Silk’s greatest strength lies in its ability to create custom-made silk threads. Even extremely thick threads, normally considered impossible, can be produced by Factory Manager Yukifumi Imamura, who modifies the machines to make them. Using Gunma’s original silkworm varieties and other types, they can freely produce silk threads ranging from 14 denier to 400 denier in various thicknesses and unique textures. This is why it is said that “there is no silk that Usui Silk cannot make.”
The silk from Usui Silk was the perfect material, combining flexibility, strength, and gentleness on the skin. However, the unprecedented challenge of “implanting silk into a brush” was a difficult task rejected by many factories. In a moment of uncertainty, Usui Silk offered to consult with an acquaintance, and eventually one artisan agreed to take on the challenge. After several months of repeated prototypes, the silk-implanted brush was finally completed. Each strand is carefully finished by hand, providing a comfortable experience that gently envelops both hair and scalp.
This brush is more than just a hair care product. It is a special piece that embodies the efforts of domestic silkworm farmers, the custom-made technology of Usui Silk, and the skill of the artisans who took on the challenge.
