Orphic Project 0 – Wandering Hour Watch

Written by

Redefining the wandering hour complication with a design inspired by the James Webb Space Telescope and luminous hexagonal precision.

Inspired by the James Webb Space Telescope, this watch bridges aerospace engineering and horology. The dial features a nine-hexagonal wandering hour system, a kinetic tribute to the telescope’s iconic 18-segment gold mirror.

By distilling this massive honeycomb array into a compact complication, the watch captures the essence of cosmic discovery. As the hexagonal discs rotate to track time, they mimic the precision of the JWST’s deployment in deep space, a wearable instrument for the modern explorer.

Orphic is the dedicated Special Projects Division of Selten. It serves as a creative sanctuary for horological exploration, allowing for the development of concepts, geometries, and movements that venture outside the core Selten aesthetic.

The “Project 0” Launch

The division begins its journey with Project 0, the inaugural release under the Orphic banner that establishes the baseline for this new direction. Moving away from traditional artisanal dials and silhouettes, the project pairs architectural case shapes with an experimental dial structure and newly discovered movement complications

By integrating these sculptural forms with non-standard layouts, Orphic creates a sharper, more distinct visual identity – built specifically for those who value mechanical integrity but seek a departure from the conventional crowd.

We are debuting three distinct dial variants, each drawing inspiration from the vastness of the cosmos. Every piece serves as a tribute to deep space, translating the awe of galactic structures into wearable, architectural forms.

NEBULA: Witness the cosmos on your wrist. Featuring a Black Mother of Pearl dial, its shifting iridescent hues capture the haunting beauty of deep space nebulae. A unique, celestial masterpiece.

STARDUST: Capture the shimmering infinity of the night sky. This Blue Aventurine dial, filled with natural metallic inclusions, sparkles like a distant galaxy, bringing the brilliance of the stars to your wrist.

VOID: Step into the ultimate abyss. Coated in deep Matte Black, the dial creates an immersive void where every marker appears to float like a distant star.

Whether you prefer your crown on the left or the right, we’ve got you covered. Our timepieces are designed for versatility, offering both Left-Hand (Destro) and Right-Hand configurations to ensure maximum comfort and accessibility for every wearer.

In this production, we have prepared 100 watches for Left Crown and 400 watches for Right Crown.

The signature case features an entirely original, angular profile, meticulously detailed with alternating polished and brushed surfaces. This sophisticated, proprietary design creates a striking aesthetic that is unique to the brand.

The custom rotor features a James Webb Space Telescope-inspired design, with hexagonal cuts filled with Swiss Super-LumiNova.

Featuring Swiss Super-LumiNova on the dial, hands, and the rotor, the watch offers exceptional legibility. This cohesive luminous application ensures a brilliant glow, unifying the design from face to movement.

The custom heated blue screws provide a unique signature to the movement, adding artisanal character.

Our CNC machined buckle is individually milled from solid metal rather than mass-produced from cheap molds. This high-cost component delivers exceptionally sharp, flawless facets that standard molding simply cannot replicate.

The wandering hour watch offers a captivating departure from traditional horology, reimagining how we observe the passing time. Instead of using standard hands, the mechanism employs three rotating discseach engraved with four numerals

The current hour appears in a clear opening at the top of the dial, gliding gracefully across a minute track from left to right. This movement allows the hour numeral to double as a pointer for the minutes. Driven by a Geneva gear mechanism, the system seamlessly indexes each disc, as one hour concludes its journey, the next rotates into position to begin the cycle anew.

The packaging is a wooden case designed to be a direct extension of the watch and its cosmic theme. The exterior is defined by a hexagonal pattern inspired by the James Webb Space Telescope, creating a seamless connection to the brand’s aesthetic through the warmth and weight of natural wood.

central window allows you to see the watch from the outside, framing the timepiece like a view through a telescope. It’s a cohesive, functional design that reflects our focus on geometry and the exploration of space.
