The Everyday Pencil. Re-engineered.
For centuries, pencils have accompanied anyone with an idea to bring to life. Today, in a world where technology continues to evolve, I wanted to rethink this everyday tool around the things I love most: engineering, design and movement.
The result? Helix Pencil.
02 – THE IDEA BEHIND HELIX PENCIL
Since graduating in mechanical engineering, I’ve been used to looking at every project in detail. One day, while studying a simple spring, I asked myself:
what if a spring could do more than just compress?
By changing its geometry, a spring can become much stiffer and transform into a guide capable of converting rotation into linear movement.
And that idea is where Helix Pencil was born.
I wanted to turn this behavior into a mechanism. By rotating the spring, the movement is transferred to an internal component that controls the opening and closing of the mechanical pencil. That’s why I chose not to hide it.
If movement is at the heart of Helix, it had to be visible.
03 – DESIGNED AROUND MOVEMENT
The goal was simple: eliminate everything that wasn’t necessary. A spring that transforms rotation into movement. A screw that shows how much lead remains. Two magnets that transmit movement without interrupting the rotation.
Nothing more. Nothing less
Two small repelling magnets allow the spring to move freely, without compromising the minimalist aesthetic. The result is a simple, compact connection, completely hidden within the mechanism. And there’s another advantage. Thanks to this system, Helix can be disassembled at any time for maintenance, to inspect the mechanism, or simply to remove any graphite residue that may have accumulated over time.
04 – FEEL THE MOVEMENT
Helix wasn’t designed just to work. It was designed to be felt.
When you hold it, you can feel the character of its materials, the surface of the lead-free brass or anodized aluminum, and the soft sound that accompanies every rotation. Every component works together to make the act of writing more precise and engaging. The amount of exposed lead can be adjusted depending on what you’re doing:
more lead for softer strokes and shading, less lead for greater precision and control.
Not only that. When you increase the pressure on the paper, the spring provides a slight cushioned movement, making the writing feel smoother and more controlled while helping reduce the risk of the lead breaking.
05 – BUILT FOR EVERYDAY USE
Helix was designed to go beyond your desk. Its compact size and balanced weight make it easy to take with you, ready to be used whenever an idea comes to you, wherever you are.
Because not every idea comes to you at a desk.
And when the lead runs out, replacing it is simple. Remove the used lead, insert a new one, and get back to drawing. The collet system is designed to work with 2 mm leads, giving you the freedom to choose from the wide range of leads available in this format.
