Nomad(e) Jacket

no·mad(e) /ˈnōˌmadˌē/ A forward-driven grapheneer who does not settle nor accepts status-quo; a wanderer. A nomad(e) is that kind of person you want by your side when things get hairy.

The Nomad(e) jacket is a high tech performance hybrid that combines the elements of an emergency jacket, E.D.C. (everyday carry) gear, and a windbreaker. Thanks to its proprietary Graphene-caged membrane, it can save your life in extreme conditions but also empower your everyday city life like no other jacket on the market.

Built with bombproof workmanship the Nomad(e) weighs less than the average hamster but performs as a heavy-duty breathable & waterproof jacket.

This jacket elevates the concept of portable performance gear to a whole new level.

At Graphene-X we engineer some of the most advanced fabrics and gear in the world. The Nomad(e) brings to years of research and development to fruition in our fifth Kickstarter campaign. Kickstarter is our launchpad: every year we launch our most ambitious product to our backers via Kickstarter, well before it hits our web store.

This year, the Nomad(e) jacket is that product. And it changes everything. Again.

We are a backer-centric company, we are fully bootstrapped by our backers and our business model puts you first when the time comes to deliver on our promises. In our short life as a company, we’ve faced challenges including wars, pandemics, and global shipping struggles – built we have overcome them every single time to deliver our Kickstarter products on time and to the game-changing standard you have come to expect.

In the world of performance gear, we are still the new guy in town, but we are not messing around.

First, emergency jacket: The purpose of an emergency jacket is to increase the chances of survival when you get lost or stranded under inclement conditions. First of all it must protect you from the elements (mainly wind and rain), increase your chances of being rescued through augmented visibility and be built to preserve as much warmth as possible.

The first thing you should do on an emergency situation – even before finding water – is to find shelter. We simplified this task by developing literally a portable shelter that can fit in your pocket and will keep you bone dry in heavy storms while also warmer than anything you’ve seen before on a product of this nature.

Emergency jackets are built to fulfill the specific function of keeping the elements out while being light enough to carry everywhere. Historically, that comes with big compromises. You’d only want to use them in an emergency because they look silly and have less breathability than a supermarket carrier bag.

And (the good ones) are extremely expensive.

Second, E.D.C.: This stands for Every Day Carry. Turn out your pockets and look at the things that are always with you: your phone, your keys, your wallet, your penknife. Stuff that is so useful, so essential that you carry it whenever you leave the house. EDC is the polar opposite of function-specific gear like an emergency jacket or a windbreaker: multi-functional, usable in a wide range of scenarios and so packable and portable that you barely notice you’re carrying it.

The Nomad(e) jacket can easily fit in your pocket and has been built to transform into a minimal bag that you can hang on your shoulder to carry your other E.D.C gear.

Third, windbreaker: A windbreaker is another piece of gear designed for a single function: it does exactly what its name suggests and protects you against the wind. On high-performance windbreakers you can also expect light weight and good levels of breathability. And that’s your lot.

The biggest restriction of regular windbreaker is that it’s not a rainstopper: the vast majority are not waterproof. Most high-performance windbreakers are coated with a water repellent chemical but would never compromise their light weight by including a fully waterproof membrane.

The Nomad(e) jacket does. And it still weighs less than most high-end windbreakers.

The minimal design of the Nomad(e) makes it wearable to fit pretty much every bill as well. In summary, the Nomad(e) fuses three different worlds to open up a new dimension in high-performance gear.

The Nomad(e) jacket is a first-in-class piece of gear, bringing together a group of benefits and features that no comparable product can offer today.

The only way to incorporate the elements of these three world into one single product was through state-of-the-art technology, fabrics technology. Normally we associate technology with smart watches, virtual worlds and electric cars, but the fabric that skins the Nomad(e) jacket has every bit as much cutting edge technology behind it as our favorite screen-based toys.

The key element of this fabric is the proprietary membrane we developed. The membrane is what makes a jacket waterproof and allows it to breathe and wick moisture from your body.

What we did here is that we empowered our membrane with a Graphene printed grid that faces towards your skin and acts as a protective “cage” around your upper body (where your key organs are). This cage adds almost no weight to the jacket, but thanks to the nature of Graphene it helps to retain heat dramatically. Because it’s printed directly onto the membrane, it doesn’t restrict your freedom of movement and action. And it boosts the strength and durability of the ripstop nylon layer that goes on top of the membrane.

We chose Ripstop nylon for the outer because of its durability. It’s normally used for outdoor products that need to be light but withstand extreme conditions. You’ll find it in high-tech sails and ultralight tents. We sandwich together the nylon outer and the membrane and bond them to each other with a thermal process.

The end result is an extremely thin but versatile fabric that feels great in your hands but can outlast the toughest tests of time and elements.

So we’ve created a game-changing fabric. But a great jacket demands workmanship and attention to detail that will unlock the potential of the fabric.

The Nomad(e) jacket features fully taped seams throughout its construction. Stitching seams make hundreds of holes in the fabric where water can get through, regardless of how good the membrane is. So, we apply a thermoplastic tape under heat and pressure that seals every seam with no gaps or holes – meaning Nomad(e) can keep you completely dry and warm even in extreme conditions.

When we look at the level of workmanship behind the Nomad(e) jacket, there are parallels with making a Swiss watch: automated machines still can’t match the quality we get from our dedicated human team.

Graphene is not only the strongest material on Earth, but it’s also the lightest. On top of this, it has other marvel-hero-like properties: It’s hydrophobic, bacteriostatic, flexible, it’s almost completely transparent and it emits a Far Infrared Wave (energy) incredibly similar to the one emitted by the human body, meaning its superb at retaining heat when it’s cold and to keep you fresh when it’s hot. This is what empowers the membrane of the Nomad(e) jacket.

We engineered the Nomad(e) jacket differently from the outset. Two years ago, we set ourselves a new mission, and we became a “little” obsessed with it. So much so that we started work on it without knowing what we’d use it for. We wanted to develop the lightest, heat-retaining, fully waterproof and breathable Graphene empowered membrane we could.

And then you told us through your survey responses that you wanted a light jacket – and we knew immediately that our new fabric was perfect for it. Sketches, tech packs and 3D renderings brought it to life on a computer screen and then to the prototypes you see on this campaign.

The Nomad(e) jacket has been built taking into account that we have a growing pool of loyal backers from both sexes and in all sorts of sizes. Ranging from a 2XS size to a 2XL, this jacket is engineered to perform and fit as a glove. Due to the nature of the Nomad(e) jacket, the cut is unisex.

NOTE: On the grey version: the hood band, the cuffs, and the front pocket zipper bands go in grey as well, not in black as shown on this prototype.

Fast fashion has taken over. Things are no longer meant to last.

Not only have we been Climate Neutral certified since the very start of our operations, with our carbon footprint fully offset since our inception, but we produce high- performance tech gear built to endure a lifetime of adventure and to perform flawlessly from the slickest city to the wildest wilderness and everything in between.

Graphene is the game-changing material that empowers our proprietary fabrics to make this possible.

Also, as a corporate member of the Graphene council, Graphene-X joins titans as Ford, BASF, and LG in the world’s biggest consortium of companies that are developing revolutionary products with Graphene. We only work with Graphene producers that are members of this Council to assure that only the best – and most environmentally sound – Graphene is used in our products.

We’ll keep it to the point: you are not a billboard. At Graphene-X we are proud to have some of the savviest backers and clients around the world and we want you to choose our products because you have absolute confidence in our commitment to quality, performance, and innovation. We keep it subtle: our logos are there if you know where to look, but we like to let our quality speak for itself.
