Every year, more than 15 billion batteries end up in landfills worldwide, creating nearly 300,000 tonnes of highly polluting waste.
These figures hide another truth: traditional batteries are made using mercury, nickel, cadmium and cobalt, all of which are expensive, rare and highly polluting. The production process involves exploitation, water consumption, and irreversible damage to ecosystems.
Most electronic devices that we use every day, such as remote controls, mouse and keyboards, watches etc…have a very low power consumption (between 0.001 and 0.05 watts).
Eighty percent of these devices are powered by two 1.5 V or 1.2V batteries because they operate at a 3V (in series). Nevertheless, we continue to produce high-capacity 1.5V batteries that have a very short life cycle of just two or three years, and take at least three hours to charge.
