URUSHI is a series of sake cups crafted from natural wood and finished with traditional Japanese lacquer.

They are lightweight, durable, and provide excellent heat retention, allowing you to enjoy the full flavor of sake without temperature changes.

Each cup features a unique texture and a lustrous finish through the traditional “wiping lacquer” method, enhancing the harmony between wood and lacquer.

This project aims to bring together traditional Japanese woodworking and lacquerware techniques to introduce the beauty of sake vessels to a wider global audience.

We believe these cups can be appreciated not only for sake but also for various uses in daily life.

Key Features:

  • Lightweight and easy to handle
  • Highly durable and resistant to breakage
  • Excellent heat retention for maintaining the ideal drinking temperature
  • Natural texture and visible wood grain for aesthetic appeal

Each cup is customizable by combining your preferred wood texture and lacquer color.

Surface Textures

Kezuri – Rugged and masculine; highlights handcraft character
Jun – Smooth and refined; versatile and understated
Kasuri – Delicate, with a woven-like grain pattern

Lacquer Color Options

Available from 8 options.

Black / Red / Raw Urushi Brown / Ivory White / Yellow / Indigo Blue / Bamboo Green / Light Blue

The wood bases are crafted by Togei, a company with over 30 years of experience in wooden spoon production. Each cup is completed using the “wiping lacquer” technique by skilled artisans in the Mino region of Japan.

This traditional method involves applying lacquer, wiping it off, and repeating the process multiple times—
creating a finish that enhances the natural beauty and durability of the wood.

The shapes have been carefully refined based on decades of woodworking expertise to ensure ease of use and a comfortable feel in the hand. As you use the cups over time, the lacquer and wood mature together, creating a beautiful aged patina.
