2-Step Cleats: Adjustable Cycling Cleats

These pair of cleats give you the option to push them rearward by 13mm to reduce calf loading and optimize pedal strokes

The 2-Step Cleats is a direct upgrade from your regular cleats and a first of its kind. On top of the same functions of regular cleats, it also offers a position that pushes your feet rearward by 13mm, which is our solution to helping you conserve more energy.

2-Step Cleats’ Rear Position shines the most during uphill climbing, when a large amount of strength is needed at once.

By shifting the cleats closer towards your mid-foot, this position reduces calf loading and allows you to engage the larger muscles to do more of the work.

Through multiple rounds of testing, we summarized the average of our data results through the graph above. First, we rode our bikes at 60 RPM (Rotation per Min) to simulate the pressure of uphill climbing. By simply switching out a traditional pair of cleats to 2-Step Cleats’ Rear Position, we saw a power increase of 20%.

We also rode our bikes at 80 RPM which simulates the ease of riding on even ground. This also saw an power increase of 13%.

We had the same rider go up a uphill route in Haogae-ro of South Korea – a frequented bike course – two different times. Once with regular Shimano cleats, once with 2-Step Cleats.

When he was clipped into the Rear Position, he arrived at the finish line a total of 30 seconds faster. It’s truly that easy!

While cleats traditionally forced all your leg muscles to be engaged, 2-Step Cleats positions your feet in a way that does not engage your calves as much.

Calves, being the weakest leg muscle, cause riders to tire out quickly. That is why 2-Step Cleats lets you rely on your larger muscles like the glutes and thighs to pull more of the weight. As a result, you feel less strained, even during intense uphill climbing or long-distance rides.

Some may ask “why not make the lever electric?” Frankly, this is a question we asked ourselves as well.

Putting electric wiring and batteries into the 2-Step Cleat would make it about 2x as heavy, which would compromise everything we value about speed when riding. Therefore, we decided to stick to a manual yet classic lever.

After a simple introduction of how the 2-Step Cleats works, we gave 10 intermediate cyclists the opportunity to test it out on the road. Among these 10 cyclists, all 10 of them expressed they had no trouble using the lever during their ride.

My name is Harkmoo Kim and I am the founder and CEO of DNJA. I started off cycling as a simple hobby but soon realized – the deeper I fell for the sport, the more there was to learn. I turned to my club’s experienced riders for tips on going long distances, distributing my energy well, and riding uphill routes. Despite their coaching, I couldn’t help but feel like there had to be a better solution.

Then one day, I thought – what if you could alternate the way you distribute your strength? I started using my engineering background to get to the bottom of this question. Before I knew it, I had found the solution with 2-Step Cleats.

Our journey doesn’t stop at 2-Step Cleats. In fact, this is truly just the beginning. With your support, we will be able to develop more innovative bike tools like the ultra-customizable cleats and ergonomic bike saddle.

We cannot express enough gratitude for your support so early on in our journey! We hope you’ll stick around to see us grow and flourish in the coming years.
